Louis LLIBOUTRY : born fébuary 19,1922 in Madrid and died October 20, 2007 in La Tronche. He was a franch glaciologist, geodynamicist and mountaineer (french alpinist). During a stay in Chile in the early 1950s, he analyzed and explained the formation of snow penitents in the ANdes, which constitued the first of his contributions to glaciology. He founded a glacioly laboratory in Grenoble un 1958, and was the director for 25 years. He set up general geophysics teaching at the University of Grenoble. His contributions to the mechanics of viscous environments (ice and earth's mantle) and to geodynamics are internationnaly recognized.
He spent his last year in Chile (1955) writing a volume (500p) : Nieves y glaciares de Chile, which prefigured the two volumes of his futur Treatise on Glaciology (more than 1000p). In the following decades, his expertise would be called upon several times in Latin America by the Peruvian Government and UNESCO before and after the Yungay disaster (burst caused by the draining of lakes located near the Huascaran glacier : 20, 000 victimes on May 31, 1970).
