Transantartica Expedition : international scientific and human expedition to cross the Antartica over 6,300 kilometers. Expedition foot with 36 sled dogs, carried out in 219 days (1989-1990). It was the first land crossing without mechanical aid. This is the only performance of this type. This mission brought 6 men : Will Steger (USA), dog handler and adventurerr, Jean-Louis Étienne (France), doctor, Viktor Boyarsky (URSS), glaciologist, Qin Dahe (Chine), glaciologist, Geoff Somers (Grande-Bretagne), member of the British Antartic Survey, Keizo Funatsu (Japon), economist.
Viktor Boyarsky : 30 ans of experience in the Polar regions. He did four expeditions to Antartica and six to the Artic between 1973 and 1987. As a member of international teams, he crossed Greenland, Antartica and the Artic Ocean on skis and dog sled. He also led 14 ski expeditions to the North Pole.
Currently director of the Artic and Antartic Museum in Saint Petersburg (Russia).
Main achievements :
- 1988 : crossing Greenland by sleight from south to north.
- 1989-1990 : one of the key men in the international trans-Antartic dog sled expedition
- 1995 : Transarctic sled expedition
- 1997-2006 : successfully guided 7 ski expeditions to the North Pole (last degrees)
